The Big Forth Clean Up is coming this August

Balanced Horizon is excited to announce our Big Forth Clean-up event, a large-scale coastal action weekend taking place across the Firth of Forth from Friday 29th to Sunday 31st August 2026, proudly supported by Forth Ports.

Headed up through our Scottish Coastal Clean Up Project, we aim to make this one of the biggest coordinated coastal clean-up weekends ever undertaken around the Firth of Forth coastline, bringing together communities, schools, environmental groups, businesses, clubs, and volunteers from across the region.

Alongside activity taking place around the Firth of Forth coastline, Forth Ports teams in Dundee and on the Thames will also be coordinating their own local clean-up activity as part of the wider campaign weekend.

Beach clean at Portobello

Whether you are already part of an existing beach clean group, taking part as an individual, representing a local club, or looking to get involved through your workplace, we want to encourage as many people as possible to take part across the weekend.

The campaign is about more than litter picking. It is a chance for people across the region to come together and make a visible, positive impact on the places we all care about, while also highlighting wider marine restoration work happening across the Firth of Forth.

Releasing oysters - FMH

On the Sunday of the event weekend, Balanced Horizon’s Forth Marine Hatchery will also deliver a series of juvenile lobster release events at locations across the Firth of Forth. These public sessions will introduce participants to the lobster lifecycle, marine restoration, and the role stock enhancement can play in supporting healthy coastal ecosystems, before taking part in supervised juvenile lobster releases into suitable habitat. The releases will provide a positive, hands-on conservation activity that complements the wider clean-up effort
and reinforces the message of marine recovery across the Forth.

A registration page has now launched where individuals, groups, and organisations can learn more about the event, sign up to take part, and keep updated on activities happening across the weekend. Updates and announcements will also be shared across Balanced Horizon’s social media channels in the lead-up to the event.
