naomi@balancedhorizon.org

Naomi has a strong background in marine ecology, with experience in habitat restoration, marine biodiversity, and animal husbandry. They work across Forth Marine Hatchery and Heriot-Watt University, developing expertise in applying academic research to optimise oyster hatchery techniques for restoration.

For three years, Naomi worked as a Research Assistant on Restoration Forth, based at Heriot-Watt University, where they managed the movement of oysters from suppliers through to restoration sites, overseeing biosecurity and monitoring throughout the process. They also provided scientific input into the oyster restoration programme, helping to ensure restoration activities were underpinned by robust research. Alongside this, Naomi worked closely with the Marine Conservation Society to deliver oyster-focused events and activities with communities and volunteers.

Naomi holds a PhD in Marine Biology, with research focused on marine biodiversity and monitoring the progress of marine habitat restoration. As Marine Science Lead at Forth Marine Hatchery, they bring together their experience in animal husbandry, oyster ecology, and marine research to support the hatchery’s aim of producing European native oyster spat and scaling up restoration efforts in the Firth of Forth as part of Restoration Forth. They are passionate about marine conservation and restoring society’s connection with nature and the environment.
